How to Place a Rug?

Feb. 23, 2022

Carpets anchor a room and infuse it with character, style and warmth. However, they can be one of the more expensive items you purchase for your home, so it's important to make sure you choose the right one. But it's not enough to just have the rug of your dreams - it's also important to know how to place it correctly.

People love the color, texture and feel that rugs bring to a room and say that this key piece is one of the main components to creating a cohesive space.

When you choose a rug, I'm a big believer in a holistic approach. You should consider every element in the room. I'm always nervous when someone goes out and buys a rug without considering their space.

We consider a rug to be as important to a room as a piece of artwork, a sofa or a chair. The rug, sofa and artwork all need to work together as a family, in terms of aesthetics, tone and texture.

Here, we share important tips on how to choose the right rug for your style and space.

Getting Started

The first thing to do is to measure your space and then decide on the aesthetic you want.

Patterned or solid color? What kind of material - natural fibers or synthetic? Does the carpet need to wear well? Will it be in a high-traffic area? Will it be partially covered by a sofa or coffee table? Do you want to sit on it? Does it matter how it feels underfoot?

Decide which type is best for your room and the needs of your home or space.

Then look at the layout of your room. If the rug is for a living or family area, consider the sofa arrangement - whether you have a single sofa, a classic combination of two and three seaters, or a modular lounge, your seating will dictate the shape and size of the sofa you are looking for in a rug.

Carpet styles and materials

Consider the color of the sofa and walls, the size and shape of the room, and the feel you want to create in your space.

If you want to create a harmonious, relaxed atmosphere, try a wool rug in pastel shades. If you prefer something dark and moody, look for rugs with darker, richer tones and rich textures.

Are you looking for a solid-colored or patterned rug? Again, weigh where you want your rug to go, what the colors are in the rest of the room, and what the arrangement of your sofa or chairs is. A dark rug will make the space feel more intimate, while a lighter rug won't look as imposing or heavy.

Look at the space as a whole and determine if the rug can be seen in its entirety when it is in place. I wouldn't go for a pretty patterned rug if it's going to be covered by a couch or other furniture.

The material you choose for your rug depends on where it will live and what it will be used for; whether it is purely functional or the luxury feel of your room.

If it needs to be durable, consider natural fibers such as synthetics, wool blends or sisal, which can wear out a lot. Consider whether you want your rug to be a short pile or a longer pile pile.

Round vs. square carpets

Rectangular or square rugs may be more traditional, but they are perfect for defining spaces. That said, there are some beautiful things about round rugs. A round rug adds softness to a room, and it's okay if it doesn't fit the space perfectly.

With a rectangular or square rug, its size must be proportional to the space or it will look out of place. In this sense, a round rug is more forgiving.

Child-friendly carpet selection

A kid-friendly rug should be both durable and good-looking. Think textures, patterns and weaves.

Look for something with a little synthetic fiber in it. A wool blend is my choice for kids - it feels good underfoot and dirt and spills can be cleaned easily.

I would also choose a rug with a pattern rather than a solid block of color. A graphic rug with two-color lines would be a great kid-friendly option, especially one with a longer pile. Kids love to sit and play on the rug, so I would make sure it feels great too.

Savings or splurge?

Rugs can be expensive, and the bigger the rug, the more it may cost; but there are many inexpensive colored rugs on the market that are perfect for adding interest and warmth to a room without going over budget.

These are great options, especially if you like to change the look and feel of a room from time to time. If you want to buy a rug that will last for years, go for a classic. Choose soft colors and natural fabrics such as silk or wool.

Oriental rugs are beautiful and often perfect for more formal rooms. They add texture and color to a space and provide a tactile feel.

Choose a pattern that you know won't go out of style; be wary of dramatic, geometric and bold statements unless you're sure it fits your style.

Important tips from Beijing Home Interiors on how to place a rug

First of all, the correct placement of a rug depends on how big the room is and the configuration of the sofa you have. It's really important to keep the balance, and that's how...

If you have two sofas...

If you have two sofas, then the rug needs to be placed evenly between them - it should be at an equal distance from each sofa - not 10 cm in front of one and 20 cm in front of the other.

If it doesn't work properly, then it's the wrong size rug for that particular space. Take the opposite name as the target.

In a small space...

In a tight space, I like to put the rug in front of the sofa, so there is a narrow strip of flooring showing - this makes the room appear lighter and more spacious.

This also allows you to have a visual separation between the sofa and the side table - try a few of these instead of the coffee table as you will be able to see more of the rug.

In a large open space...

In a large open space, the rug should be placed under the front legs of both sofas - or if you have a large rug, then both sofas can sit completely on the rug.

If you also have chairs in the space, then the front legs of the chairs should touch or "hover" over the rug. This position creates an area of comfort without isolating the area from the rest of the room.

With modular sofas...

For modular sofas, measure the space of the rug carefully - the standard size rug is 230 cm x 160 cm, which is very difficult for a modular sofa, as it may be insufficient on both sides.

A custom rug is a better option. A large rug makes a large open space feel more intimate by connecting all the elements.

Open areas...

Rugs are the perfect tool for dividing space in an open area, whether you are defining space for a living, family or dining area.

If you're zoning your dining area (or if you're putting a rug in your dining room), choose one that's big enough for the table and all the chairs to sit completely on.
